As an important staple in Japan, it is essential to know how to cook rice properly. A good bowl of Japanese rice should be fluffy and light. When cooked it should be slightly sticky, yet fragrant.

How to Cook the Perfect Bowl of Japanese Rice

Ordinary rice can be delicious even when eaten plainly. Plain rice "gohan" can be consumed and accompanied by several okazu dishes, tsukemono (pickles) and miso soup. To cook Japanese Rice the right way in your rice cooker, just follow these simple steps.
  1. Wash rice gently to retain its flavour. 
  2. Drain rice well with colander.
  3. Place rice in rice cooker and add adequate amount of water (accordingly).
  4. Soak rice for at least 30 minutes. 
  5. Switch on the rice cooker. 

Fried Garlic Rice

Ingredients (2 servings)
  • 2 portions of cooked Japanese rice
  • 3 tablespoons¬†Kewpie mayonnaise
  • 5¬†cloves of garlic,¬†chopped finely
  • 2¬†stalks of spring onions,¬†diced
  • ¬Ĺ¬† onion, diced
  • 2¬†eggs
  • 2 tablespoons¬†soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper
Instructions
  1. Transfer cooked rice into a large bowl, while the rice is still warm, mix in mayonnaise.
  2. Heat the butter in a frying pan over medium-high heat and add garlic once melted. 
  3. Stir-fry garlic for about a minute, add the onions and half of the spring onions. Stir-fry for 30 seconds.
  4. Add rice and soy sauce, cook until they are evenly combined.
  5. Move the rice to one side of the pan, add the eggs into the empty side of the frying pan.
  6. Scramble eggs until cooked. Mix eggs with rice
  7. Add salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with spring onions and enjoy!

Curry Rice

Ingredients (2 servings)

  • 2¬†portions of cooked Japanese rice
  • 3 tablespoons¬†S&B dinner curry sauce mix flakes
  • 200g beef, cubed
  • ¬Ĺ¬†¬†onions, minced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 potato, chopped¬†
  • 1/2 carrot, chopped¬†
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cube of soup stock¬†
  • 700ml water
  • 1 tablespoon salt¬†

Instructions

  1. Stir-fry minced onion with oil over low heat until golden.
  2. Add meat and vegetables and stir-fry on medium heat for about 10 mins. 
  3. Add water and soup stock cube and bring to boil.
  4. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until ingredients are tender. 
  5. Add the curry flakes into the saucepan and stir continuously till the sauce thickens. 
  6. Add salt to taste. Serve over rice and toppings of your choice. 

Butadon (Pork Rice Bowl)

Ingredients (serves 2)

  • 2¬†portions of cooked Japanese rice
  • 1/4 bottle Morita Buta Don no Tare (Butadon Sauce)
  • 250g thinly sliced pork loins or belly
  • 1 small onion, sliced (optional)
  • oil

Instructions

  1. Marinate the pork in 1 tablespoon of Morita Buta Don no Tare for 2 hours.
  2. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.
  3. Add onions and cook until softened and translucent. Set aside.
  4. Add pork slices to the pan, let them sear for 1-2 minutes. Cook on both sides till browned. 
  5. Add remaining sauce and let it bubble. Reduce sauce until it thickens.
  6. Add cooked onions from before. Remove cooked pork and sauce away from heat.
  7. Layer pork over rice. Pour sauce over rice. Garnish with chopped spring onions.
